چکیده

In this review an attempt has been made to analyze the results of the studies that explored the changes in the growth and development of plants exposed to continuous light published since the 1930s, including papers that are available in Russian only. Potential benefits of using a 24-h photoperiod for the production of greenhouse crops, transplant production in closed controlled environment systems and the culture of plants in controlled ecological life support systems are reviewed. Continuous lighting is shown to be a useful tool for speeding up the selection of crops. The mechanisms involved in a plant’s response to continuous light and causes of negative effects of continuous light (foliar chlorosis, limited or reduced plant growth and productivity) are discussed. Plant response to continuous light depends on plant tolerance and can be modified by alterations in temperature, light intensity, CO2 level, humidity, mineral nutrition and other environmental factors. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Semi-Continuous Cultivation of Photosynthetic Cells in a Flat Plate Photobioreactor

From an engineering point of view, the effect of light intensity distribution on the stability of growth rate should be taken into account in designing effective photobioreactors and sustaining stable growth rates. In the experiments described here, in order to keep operational parameters at an almost constant level, a semi-continuous culture method was developed for cultivation of photosynthet...

Growth and tuberization of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) under continuous light.

The growth and tuberization of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) maintained for 6 weeks under four different regimes of continuous irradiance were compared to plants given 12 hours light and 12 hours dark. Treatments included: (a) continuous photosynthetic photon flux of 200 micromoles per square meter per second cool-white fluorescent (CWF); (b) continuous 400 micromoles per square meter per s...

Acclimatization Potential of Dracaena Sanderiana ‘Victory’ to Contrasting Light Environments

The present study was conducted to ascertain the ability of Dracaena sanderiana ‘Victory’, a foliage plant species of commercial importance in both domestic and international markets, to thrive under contrasting light environments. The experiment was carried out inside a semi-open greenhouse in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Same sized and same aged, ready-to-ship export quality plugs of Dracaena sande...

A Comparison of the Effects of Green Light and of Red Light on the Simple-leaf Development of Intact and Decapitated Bean Plants.

Increasing effort is being directed to the study and interpretation of both quantitative and qualitative effects of light on plants and a number of investigators have emphasized the inadequacy of present information. Any satisfactory description of the ways in which light may affect the form and growth of plants may be anticipated only as a result of many small contributions by various investig...

Identification and Functional Characterization of Arabidopsis icl Mutant Under Trehalose Feeding in Light and Dark Conditions

Trehalose is a non-reducing sugar that plays an important role in plant growth and development. To study the role of trehalose on lipid metabolism and gluconeogenesis, Arabidopsis thaliana wild type (WT) and TreF (a line expressing trehalase) were grown on ½ MS medium with or without 100 mM sucrose and or trehalose in light or continuous darkness. In dark, trehalose leads skotomorphoge...
